Spring’s in bloom, summer’s in sight, and eager city dwellers are filling up bare backyards with grills, fire pits, and furniture. It’s patio season in Pittsburgh, and we’re recalling our favorite outdoor retreats with serious envy. These spaces represent the crème de la crème of warm weather indulgence — so kick up your feet, crack open a cold one, and soak in that Vitamin D, stat. We hope you’re taking notes.

This enclosed setup makes the most of a small space with its open railing, natural slate tile, and convenient kitchen access. We also installed a traditional chandelier to mirror the home’s comfortable interior.
BRIGHTON HEIGHTS, PGH
Simple yet sophisticated, this deck was added to maximize an otherwise bland backyard. With a two-car garage around the corner and a built-in garden to the right, the spot’s remaining footage is primed for creativity.
Out of the kitchen’s glass garage door and up the tiled patio’s staircase, an enclosed wooden deck unfolds into several upward tiers — eventually forming a walkway to this home’s one-car garage. Surrounding the deck are built-in planters that transform the entire area into a secluded urban oasis.
North of Pittsburgh, in Erie County’s Fairview Township, this wrap-around porch is accessible from three spots. Overlooking the home’s spacious, suburban backyard, the classic setup boasts major entertainment value.
EAST LIBERTY, PGH
It’s double the fun at this East End spot. From the second-floor master bedroom, a glass garage door gives way to a private escape for two. Meanwhile, everyone’s invited to the lower level’s party-ready deck — a prime locale for grillin’ and chillin’, day or night.
MT. LEBANON, PA
Got enough furniture to fill this suburban space’s three decks and wrap-around porch? Ideal for a large family, the home sits on one acre of secluded, wooded land, offering peace and privacy just seven miles south of the city. (Pssst — this one’s on the market.
